Learn about Agriculture gives young people the chance to learn more about food and farming
We teamed up with the brilliant Papillon Project to bring Learn about Agriculture Impact Days to two Norfolk Secondary Schools and where we asked the question…
Where do you want your food to come from?
The schools that took part were The Hewett Academy and Thorpe St Andrew School. We saw almost 500 young people across the two days. The young people that took part were enthusiastic and engaged and asked some thought provoking questions.
There were three stations that young people visited throughout the day. The first was the allotment station which dicussed the environmental benefits of growing your own food, but highlighted just how much time and effort goes in to growing your own food. Discussions were had about how busy everyone is and how most people don’t have the time or the space to grow their own food.

The agriculture station gave young people the opportunity to speak to a farmer and hear about their work. They heard how farming is able to produce much higher yields and more consistent quality than growing your own foods, but discussions were also had about the environmental impact of agriculture.
Finally students visited the supermarket station where they had the opportunity to learn more about food miles. Food miles are the distance food travels from where it’s grown to your plate. As well as exploring the food miles of common foods, young people also had the chance to learn more about seasonality and how they can support local growers.
